Library/ independent thinking

Libraries are special places for me because it is so quiet space that I can concentrate on my study, reflect on my own self, and create new ideas. What is more, I like smell of paper and ink, weight of dictionary, and texture of books. Looking back on my life so far, I was always in library and got clues to solve problems when I made an important decision; in other words, libraries are essential facilities for my life.
Today, (15 Jul) I’ve learned how to use libraries through online Minerva. In the class, although I just took a look at the library site, I found it helps me a lot. There are many useful functions such as searching, booking, keeping, and even effective tips for my study such as critical thinking.
After exploring some of the basic functions, I tried searching the book that I need for genre analysis report. To my surprise, the huge number of possible books appeared though I just typed the piece of words.
Moreover, most books are available online which means I don’t need to go to the library to borrow it. Since my undergraduate date is about 10 years ago, the Internet search at that time was not as convenient as today. I remember that I had trouble getting books I needed for my thesis so I used to go to the city library that was far from my university.
In this reason, I think I’m studying in comfortably environment in Leeds. However, I feel a little concern because as the system of libraries become convenience, students might lose precious opportunities that they can find fateful paper books by chance.

Talking about Independent thinking, it is inevitable skill for students. I’ve learned it from the first Hyde text to Thomas, Taylor, and Chaffee. Reading several texts about critical thinking gives me different perspectives for it, as a result, I can understand and use it from various approaches. Independent thinking is one of essential skills to master critical thinking; In addition, it is also important that analyzing issues, supporting opinion by evidences and questioning.

Reflection on the Edward de Bono’video

This video is about creative potential and emotion potential. Dr. Edward de bono pointed out the “possibility”and the “exploration”.(we need to think more not just stop in finding a fact.)Moreover,he suggested that we can use “six hats”(six modes of thinking)to develop our ideas.Because mood and emotion may effect our thinking.

This video has nearly 30 mins and there are many academic language in it,like antibiotic,so it’s not easy for me to follow though with english subtitle.I need to re-watch the video again and again.

While watching it,I made some notes about the keywords ,some words I didnt understand and some words he repeated one more time.I think these notes can help me understand what he is talking about.

This video and the 6 hats activity i did in the class are all help me to use open-mind to see the world.Although something we had already done perfectly but no enough,we need more exploration and find more possibilities.

Actually,my listening skills are very poor,I think there is no shortcut in improving it, just listen more and more.

Critical thinking about master course

Well, we have learned critical thinking for several weeks. As a lawyer, sometimes i think i use it more frequently than others. In daily life, many people are interested in my work. Is it interesting? Of course. Is it excellent as on a TV show? Not really.

I noticed that many my classmates major in the media field. So i want to share my ideas and questions about my major related to media. And I try to use critical thinking to explain it.

I want to talk about the meaning of justice at first. Maybe it is too complex to discuss at the blog. But justice is the most central of law which related to morality, ethic, value and culture. ‘There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes.’ written by William Shakespeare. That sentence can be applied in justice.

In fact, i think justice is critical in itself. When i was a law undergraduate, i believed i can uphold justice for everyone. After a few years work, i realized there is not absolute justice.

Even justice for somebody is injustice for others. But most of the people only want to seize the things and accept the facts in their favour, and they regard this way as justice. In new media time, this view from millions of people creates a powerful force which often influences the judicial decision. In China, more and more public opinions lead legal opinion. The problem is that the most of people just know the little information about real case. But public are very curious about cases, especially sensational cases. To cater to the public to see mentality, new media such as We-media, website are more likely to exaggerate the facts and explain cases subjectively. So readers just read that media want to them read. What’s more? public is stirred up emotions by media. All of them want to take part in judgment by their own values. But they are not jurors.

I ever wanted to explain a hot issue by law to my friend, but she accused me of heartless. She was angry with the judgment and judge. Many people like her only see a tip of the iceberg, but they have infinite faith in their opinions.

Judges are afraid to against public will. Although they make a judgment by law, They can be attacked on the internet and lose their job. Even government also interferes legal affairs because of public pressure.

The problem was caused by the condition. There are different judgments on the same crimes. Then finally injustice has happened.

That’s the question i concerned and i really want to discuss it with my friends.
